Notes and feedback

Purpose of conference

  • to offer an open invitation to anyone in the region to contribute to developing athletics in the region
  • provide an update on the modernisation process and the new sw region
  • have a series of practical workshops to develop specific target areas such as coaching, officials, road running and funding
  • start the process of change for volunteers in the SW
  • Enable prospective regional council members to facilitate discussion groups
  • To present awards to the regioanl winners of the clubs:future club awards 2006

Purpose of England Athletics -  South West

  • To provide the best for all athletes
  • Provide top class athletes
  • Support smaller clubs to help improve standards of all athletes including fitness runners and veterans
  • To demonstrate that people of all ages and abilities can discover, develop and enjoy activity  and that the south west as a region can be the best!
  • Every school child has the chance to experience and develop in athletics. Provide clubs who can improve them further in every area linking to opportunities for major medals
  • Health, fun, achievement, progress towards national and international levels

Structure of conference

  • Brief  welcome by Interim chairman
  • Presentation of regional club awards (assisted by Andy Paul UKA)
  • Presentation by regional manager on plans for the future
  • Question and answer session
  • Workshop 1 ( coaching, officials, disability, or clubs)
  • Workshop 2 ( track and field, cross country, road running, or funding)
  • Feedback session from all workshops (5 min each group)
  • Question and answer session/conclusions – the way forward

Each workshop was facilitated by a volunteer who enabled a loosely structured discussion around priorities. Each group was tasked with simple points for discussion and an agreement to contribute to meet again for more detailed discussions/planning.

What went well:

What could have been improved:

Most groups had productive discussions and went away happy and positive

Overwhelming positive feedback

Timing, structure and content balance

Opportunity for networking and discussion

Good attendance and positive atmosphere

Enabled volunteers to be involved and included in the process

Ensure  facilitators stick to brief and facilitate discussion, and not do q & a session

Slightly longer day to enable longer workshops

Future plans

Arrange conference annually

Agreed 3 focus workshop dates to take next steps (road running, disability and cross country)

Encourage and support other focus groups to meet in near future ( coaching, officials, clubs)

Ensure all feedback and regional plan reflects contributions from conference and other consultation

Feedback from attendees at SW Conference 2006

·          Valuable meeting but would have appreciated input into other workshops. Perhaps could have swapped over with sports facilitations.

·          Coaching – Level 2coaching qualification is too brief. There are huge gaps in their knowledge. More needs to be done to ensure that they know more. In the level 2 coaching course they should understand the need to keep learning.

·          Sub regions league. Top clubs in each sub region to regional to national final.

·          Would it be worth having a conference every six month to review progress

·          A very worthwhile and professionally run meeting. Would defiantly be worth having each year.

·          Clubs should merge teams to make it easier for athletes to progress. E.g. instead of having North Devon, Exeter and Newton Abbot southern Men’s team the teams should merge to make Devon A.C with a first and second team. This means that athletes who compete for Newton Abbot (dividsion 3) and are too good for that division can move onto division 1 without leaving their club. In the same way Exeter

·          Well done for the weekend I thought the presentation went done really well and the messages were clear and positive. We were  really chuffed to recieve the award and fleece and the cheque will be a welcome addition to our athletics work. It's a real time of opportunity for the sport.

·          Coaches don’t have a broad enough knowledge of area’s in athletics. E.g. every coach I have been trained by knows lots about technique but I have not been taught anything about Nutrition. I think that start to have at least 1 coach who in area’s such as Nutrition, weights etc.

·          Very useful day. More chances to network would be beneficial for sharing of experiences and expertise.

·          Useful to hear comments from all over the southwest. Seems to be the same in officials and competition.

·          Maybe in 6 months to a year. Useful to have summary of outcomes of what has been achieved.

·          Good conference. It is now important that we actually take process forward as quickly as possible.

·          Very good conference, keep up the good work.

·          Very worthwhile. How else are you going to know what we want and feel.

·          Conference as good value. Realisation of poor regional knowledge by some of the smaller counties. Apparent.

·          Is good to meet with other and exchange practices. 1 work shop is better than 2.

·          Useful as a chance to see other S.W people need opportunity to discuss subjects in more depth.

Who are not yet good enough for division 1 can go down to division 3 where they will be against similar ability athletes.

·          Some groups in athletics feel ‘cliquy.’ Today the atmosphere was friendly. Let’s aim to keep it that way. Andy Paul was very good.

·          Good event, will be useful to do again when some of the activities have started (1 year) to update and use for more input.

·          Feedback:- Andy was very enthusiastic but could be better at listening not lecturing.

·          The work shops were good but a little short. Next time it could be nice to have the conference over two days and have 4 work shops on each day as opposed to 8. This could allow for the work shop to be a better quality and get more in put.

·          A lot of good ideas raised and need to be implemented.

·          Extremely useful doing net working

·          Desperately need to hold this event annually, it’s the only time for all the clubs/disciplines to discus regional issues to strengthen the sport

·          Good conference. Andy did talk a lot about current ideas and policies which was good but we did not get a lot of time to put our own idea’s in.

·          Excellent, well-planned, well-though out day. Should be an annual event and all UKA regions should do the same. Look forward to the next one.

·          Been a good session as long as changes that want to be made can be enforced.

·          Like the split workshop, then feedback session. So felt all informed.

·          Very useful, especially to hear the views of other aspects of the sport.

·          Police Co-operation RE road running including costs

·          Mentoring should be more about someone to talk to, bounce ideas off (even by email or phone), just someone to seek advise from.

·          If We (The South West Hub) are going to improve coaching then we have to make these things easier, and more relevant, (especially with our geography).

·          A very positive day, needs to be an annual event. Agenda item- National Coaching certificate

·          Good conference. The workshop needs to be a little longer

·          Yes it is a good thing. By coming together we will become a united region (Or what ever we are called – I’m confused on that)

·          Useful conference. Important that we get feedback and update information on actions and points raised.

Questions and ideas

  • Facility assessors to have a meeting to discuss mutual problems and set up a regional contacts list .
  • Want to see changes talked about, especially competition across south west – scrap all small scale competitions and having a regional champs with electronic timing
  • Funding to send a team to European Masters in Germany 2007
  • Coaching modules that relate directly to road running is essential
  • 7 x open meetings held in each county over the summer to form a grand prix
  • Where does multi terrain fit in – with road or cross??
  • Standardised membership  form that can be sent to areas/ regions without the need to re-write several times
  • Level 1 coaching course to include officiating module
  • How can we let the under 17 – Senior age athletes who are not quite AA standard feel that there is no point to drop out as it’s a difficult age and nothing for this – how do we prevent this?
  • Can we have a county team managers meeting and discuss selection and squads?
